Putra Heights inferno – who let this happen?

It’s a day since a massive explosion rocked the peaceful neighbourhood of Putra Heights. A gas pipeline, part of the Petronas distribution network, burst into a raging inferno. The damage? Dozens of homes charred, vehicles burnt, people injured, lives disrupted.

We’ve seen the photos – blackened skies, blown-out windows, families standing barefoot in rubble. But the biggest question remains: who’s responsible?

The pipeline didn’t just rupture out of nowhere. It sits along a protected reserve. And guess what?

There’s been ongoing construction work of shop houses mere metres from the pipe, allegedly even on top of the reserved land.

The developer behind this? Hong & Hong Homes Sdn. Bhd. The contractor appointed? Pinterest Ventures Sdn. Bhd. – also seen listed as Parttest Ventures Sdn. Bhd. on another MBSJ-approved site nearby.

So why were their workers allegedly digging around a high-pressure pipeline during Hari Raya Aidilfitri? Was this a calculated attempt to work while supervision from the authorities was relaxed during the holiday? Were corners being cut – permissions ignored, risks sidelined – in the pursuit of speed and profit?

According to residents, complaints were made. There were warnings. Some even claimed the fence protecting the pipeline reserve was taken down. Yet, the digging continued.

Meet the decision-makers

From SSM records, Hong & Hong Homes is run by three directors:

• Hong Tuan Hooi – based in Damai Perdana

• Hong Tuan Hwa – residing in USJ

• Ngo Rit Woon – from Kajang

Their company earned over RM6 million in revenue last year and made nearly RM1 million in pre-tax profits. And yet, did they ensure their contractors followed safety protocol near a known pipeline? Did they communicate with Petronas? Did they obtain proper clearance?

Meanwhile, the contractor, Pinterest Ventures, has its own story. Founded in 2017 and based in Seri Kembangan, it raked in a massive RM18 million in revenue the year before last. The directors – Lim Kuok Soon, Chew Siew Leong, and Lee Kam Hung – are all seasoned professionals. But where were they when their workers (allegedly) dug through a gas corridor?

Let’s not forget: Petronas pipelines require strict clearance. Special permits. Supervision. Any project near these lines must go through a rigorous process. Was this done? Or was it simply easier to go ahead and ask forgiveness later?

The real victims

While the companies remain silent, the people of Putra Heights suffer. According to media reports and on-the-ground witnesses:

• At least 78 homes and 10 shop lots were damaged

• More than 120 people were injured, including children

• Some residents lost everything – vehicles, documents, savings, the very roof over their heads

Residents were still celebrating raya, some were resting when the explosion shattered their lives. One resident’s car, parked by the roadside, became an inferno. Another watched helplessly as the fire spread to their child’s room.

This isn’t just about “investigations are underway.” This is about gross negligence – or worse, criminal recklessness.

Demanding accountability

It’s time for answers. We cannot allow a culture where developers quietly proceed on risky projects without transparency. We cannot let well-connected contractors walk away while the rakyat rebuild with tears in their eyes.

Here’s what must happen:

1. Full disclosure – Did Petronas approve works near the pipeline? Was there a permit?

2. Criminal investigation – Not just a safety probe. Was this encroachment illegal?

3. Company directors summoned – Hong & Hong and Pinterest Ventures must explain, under oath, what happened.

4. Victims compensated – Immediately and fairly. Not through insurance delays or red tape.

The public deserves more than press statements. We deserve action. If found guilty, those responsible – be they developers, contractors or approving authorities – must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Because if we let this slide, the next fireball might not just take property. It might take lives.
